Bienvenidos! Thanks to the time and effort of my professors Dr. Denise Barkis-Richter (Communication) and Karen Mascotte (Humanities), I will take you on a journey which before I only dreamed about taking. I'm taking advantage of this time in my life to do what I enjoy most--traveling, volunteering, communicating, and seeing dance performed in its original region! I'll do my best to guide you through this cultural exploration of San Antonio and Oaxaca through my words and photos.

EXTRA! EXTRA! Steven Spielberg Retires!

My almond shaped eyes widened as I heard Denise say she will accept our final project to be visual or audio. I’m not the greatest writer but with the help of images and the unique voices of real people I’m pretty confident that I can create something interesting. I have a great interest in documentaries and short films. I enjoy watching PBS, attending film festivals, and listening to stories on NPR.

Ever since I decided to go back to school full time so many doors have opened for me. Unfortunately, my pocket and watch will not allow me to walk into all of them at once. I was first disappointed that I did not get the internship at the HEB arsenal. I later found out that I was accepted to this service-learning program. This meant I was not able to accept producer Pablo Veliz’s invitation to work on his next short film “Clemente.” I immediately decided I wanted to be a part of this film after seeing him as a guest speaker in one of Mr. Rios’ evening classes. Mr. Rios was nice enough to give me a copy of Pablo’s first project “La Tragedia de Macario,” which was accepted to this year’s Sundance Festival. After much contemplation, I chose traveling and expanding my knowledge over the filmmaking experience. Now is my chance to do both! Thanks Denise!

Ok, so I lied in my blog title—Spielberg will perhaps never retire. No one ever said I couldn’t dream. I guess I am really going to have to work on my “accuracy” when it comes to writing.

Random note: I’m listening to the relaxing, and mostly instrumental, “Motorcycle Diaries” soundtrack.

Movie trivia: Upcoming movie “Nacho Libre,” starring hilarious Jack Black was filmed in Oaxaca.

Liz, Again I think you underestimate your ability to communicate with the written word. I thoroughly enjoy your observations. On a technical note, your grammar and spelling seem superior to that of some of our classmates'. You have an original VOICE. Thanks for sharing.
