Bienvenidos! Thanks to the time and effort of my professors Dr. Denise Barkis-Richter (Communication) and Karen Mascotte (Humanities), I will take you on a journey which before I only dreamed about taking. I'm taking advantage of this time in my life to do what I enjoy most--traveling, volunteering, communicating, and seeing dance performed in its original region! I'll do my best to guide you through this cultural exploration of San Antonio and Oaxaca through my words and photos.

Summer Ya Esta Aqui!

San Antonio days have yet to reach sizzling temperatures but my summer has officially begun.

As I drove into one of the parking lots, I immediately spotted a campus police officer directing traffic. I rolled down my window and as I looked up at his gold-rimmed glasses, I asked him if he knew which building was the Moody Learning Center. He smiled and quickly responded, "I think it's that one," while pointing to the old white building to my right. He directed me with his finger once again and I accelerated forward to park at the left (furthest from the center).

I gave myself plenty of time to find the classroom and to be on time for class. Once in the busy building, I lost count on how many quick left turns I made from one floor after another. After going a circles about 3 times on the seventh floor, I walked into a quite computer lab and asked a young lady behind the main desk if she knew where my class was to meet. "It's right behind you" she whispered. I turn over my left shoulder to see the white numbers on the wall--I knew that--and thank her. The un-lit room was locked and so I sat on the burgundy couch next to a woman working on her laptop. "Nice to meet you Melissa!"

As we stood around the island of Dell computers, we introduced ourselves after our professor enlightened us with her background and passion for travel. I am really excited to work with such a diversified group of college students during this summer service-learning program. Only the first day and I am already enjoying the class. I learned more than I expected in just the first day of class, which by the way, seemed to last not long enough.

I look forward to learning more about literary journalism, as I have little knowledge of the subject. Well of course now I know ACCURACY and FAIRNESS are essential in this field. I must remember these key points so I write and repeat them as much as possible. ACCURACY and FAIRNESS. Okay, I'll stop. I promise that the better blogs are yet to be posted.

Hasta pronto!

Random note: Medieval Baebes rock! Thanks to my handsome buddy, Mario Lopez, I have found my new favorite group (sorry Bond girls).

Liz, I'm glad to see that you understand the importance of accuracy and fairness in journalistic writing. If you learn nothing else this summer session, you'll have learned the most important lesson. Cheers, Denise

Liz: Really liked your blog. It sparkles like your personality. I think you know more about writing than you're giving yourself credit for. See you in class.
